Drain Cleaning in La Palma, CA
A slow drain is annoying. Several slow drains at once is a warning. Call to reach a local plumber who can clear it.
One clogged drain, or a bigger problem?
The first question is how many drains are affected. That tells you a lot about where the problem is:
- One fixture - a single slow sink, tub or toilet - usually means a clog close to that fixture: hair in a tub drain, grease in a kitchen line, too much paper in a toilet.
- Several fixtures, especially on the lowest level, or water coming up in the tub when you flush, usually means a blockage further down, in the main line that carries everything out to the street.
- Gurgling sounds, sewage smells or water backing up in a floor drain or shower all point toward the main line.
Main line problems need attention sooner, because they can lead to sewage backing up into the house.
What causes clogs in La Palma homes
- Kitchen grease and food. Fats, oils and starchy food harden in pipes. Garbage disposals help, but they don't make grease disappear.
- Hair and soap in bathroom drains, made worse by hard water, which helps soap scum build up.
- Wipes. Even ones labeled "flushable" don't break down the way toilet paper does.
- Mineral scale. Southern California's hard water leaves deposits inside older pipes, narrowing them over time.
- Tree roots finding their way into older sewer lines through joints and cracks. A common cause of recurring main line clogs. See sewer line repair.
- Older drain pipes. Many homes from the 1960s and 70s still have original cast iron or clay drain and sewer lines that corrode, crack or sag with age.
What you can safely try first
- A plunger - a cup plunger for sinks and tubs, a flange plunger for toilets.
- Clear the stopper or strainer. Bathroom sink and tub stoppers collect a surprising amount of hair.
- A simple drain snake or zip tool for hair clogs in bathroom drains.
- Hot (not boiling) water for minor grease buildup in a kitchen sink.
We'd steer clear of harsh chemical drain cleaners. They can damage older pipes, they're dangerous if they splash, and they make the job harder and riskier for a plumber if the drain is still blocked afterwards.
How plumbers clear drains
Cabling (snaking). A motorized cable with a cutting head is fed into the drain to break up and pull out the clog. It's the standard approach for most sink, tub and main line blockages.
Hydro jetting. High-pressure water scours the inside of the pipe, clearing grease, scale and root fragments rather than just punching a hole through them. It's often used on main lines with repeated problems, provided the pipe is in good enough condition.
Camera inspection. A small camera on a cable shows what's actually inside the pipe: roots, a crack, a sag where water sits, or a broken section. If a main line keeps clogging, a camera inspection is the best way to find out why.
Keeping drains clear
- Wipe greasy pans with a paper towel before washing, and put fats in the trash.
- Use hair catchers in showers and tubs.
- Flush only toilet paper.
- Run plenty of water after using the garbage disposal.
- If your main line has had root problems before, ask a plumber about a maintenance schedule.
When to call
Call if a plunger and a simple snake haven't worked, if more than one drain is slow, if you notice sewage smells or backups, or if the same drain keeps clogging. Repeat clogs usually mean there's something in the line that needs to be found, not just cleared again.

Call (000) 000-0000Frequently asked questions
Why does my tub fill up when I flush the toilet?
That usually means a blockage in the main drain line, so water from the toilet backs up into the lowest fixture. Stop using water and have the main line cleared.
Are chemical drain cleaners safe?
They can damage older pipes and are hazardous to handle. Mechanical methods are safer and more effective.
How often should a main line be cleaned?
Only when needed for most homes. If roots keep coming back, a plumber may suggest regular maintenance or a permanent repair.
